2 cops among 4 injured in ‘gunfight’ in Sylhet

Four people, including two cops and a police informer, were injured in an incident of ‘gunfight’ with the accomplices of an arrested robbery suspect in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet early Thursday.

Sylhet district police additional superintendent Luthfur Rahman said that Golapganj police arrested Abdul Mannan, 40, son of late Asab Ali, of Golapnagar Uttargaon at the upazila, on Wednesday afternoon as he was wanted in 13 cases filed for committing criminal offences including robbery.

Following the information extracted from Mannan, police conducted a raid at Tahipur village of the same upazila taking him at about 2:30am on Thursday to recover illegal arms, but his accomplices opened fire on police personnel while they were approaching toward them, the police officer said.

‘The lawmen also retaliated forcing the robbery gang members to flee the scene firing gunshots that hit their fellow Mannan and cops,’ he added.

Golapganj police officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman said that Mannan was admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College

Hospital after rescuing him from the spot from where 1 pipe gun loaded with 2 bullets and 2 machetes were seized.

The injured police sub-inspector Pintu Sarker, constable Raki Kazi and their informer were also admitted to Sylhet Police Line Hospital, he said.

Two cases were filed against the attackers for possessing illegal arms and ammunitions and assaulting the lawmen, the OC said. (Source: New Age)
